Institution from the State Secretariat of Creative Culture, Economy and Industry, was created in 1966 by Luiz de Souza Leão, during the context of insertions of the Historical and Pedagogical Museums into the State of São Paulo.
Located in the west of the State of São Paulo, the city was founded in 1929 by Luiz de Souza Leão. With an Indian origin, the name Tupã – from Tupi-Guarani, God – pays a tribute to the local natives, the Indians, who to date live in reserves in the city.
Among the main factors that enabled the city’s initial growth and development were the advancement of the Companhia Paulista de Estradas de Ferro (Railroad Company), the quality of the soil for growing coffee and the commercial extraction of hardwood, besides the direct participation of the immigrants, among which Latvians, Japanese, Portuguese, Italians, Spaniards, Syrians, among others.
Presently with 63,476 inhabitants and about 450 km from the capital of São Paulo in a straight line, Tupã is presently the political and reference center for the new Alta Paulista, due to its location and services provided in the safety, health and education areas.
